After

And we talked about laundry,
Soap bubbles, holidays,
Hammers that broke at first stroke,
Hamsters and cats running from us,
Floors which scream murder,
And books we had read, places
We went to and food that we liked,
All we said only meant to reassure

That we were still there together,
You and me in a sea green bed,
With sea green sheets,
Our clothes one pile
As we knew each other
In a different way, but the night
Had yet to be conquered.
So we kept talking till dawn.

  1. A wonderful poem, with wonderful images.

  2. Ah those all night talks, bright words, stories and laughter, pushing back against the darkness and passing time…your poem takes me there again, thank you

  3. That is beautiful

  4. Beautiful and so wonderfully charged with imagery and meaning. Your eye for detail is always a pleasure to observe

  5. That second stanza especially, after the chatter of the first, moves so deeply toward the emotion of a relationship. Well done.
