After lace and silver days

The lace and silver days are over,
the rough wood is the floor of our dinners now
but the candles still wave their shades
in wild imagination
over the old walls
of our humble fortress in the village
and your voice is deeper.
Your quick smiles
tell me your thoughts
are those of when we first met.
We do not need the lace and silver
to taste the richness of the food,
to feel each other’s memory
and be lovers in the iron bed,
to hear the lark sing just for us.
