Watching the curtains

you forgot to rise that day
and watched the curtains meet the sky
then fading into shades for night
and back you went to sleep;
the light of day had gone
and you slept deep this time
the world went on without you
and now you knew it could be done

Comfort in times of grief

If its draughty in the coffin
and your body feels a chill:
just remember, what a fun time
you would have now, as the will
at this moment has been read
and you left the family nill!

NaPoWriMo Opposite day “Night Shift” versus “Your elsewhere space”

NaPoWriMo – National Poetry Writing Month, (USA)

Today I decided to have a peak at the prompt of NaPoWriMo , this is what it says there:

“Do you remember β€œOpposite Day”? When I was growing up, this was an irregularly declared day (usually Wednesdays, as I recall, but not every Wednesday) in which statements were supposed to mean the opposite of what they usually do. Today I challenge you to take a poem that already exists (it could be one of your own), and rewrite it so that each line is the opposite of the original. Poems with strong declarative sentences and clear images are good candidates for this exercise.”

I hope I got it right! I took this poem and made it what I think is the opposite.

Your elsewhere space

The quiet moment before dawn I cherish,
you asleep and near me, close, but now a bit
estrange, as light has not yet found your face.
I watch you in your elsewhere space
that I can never share with you. I love you
deep, in latest moments of the night.

The opposite:

Night shift

The busy moment before night I hate as
you make haste for work and leave me by myself,
I watch you dress, and hear you stumble
down the stairs, white light is shining
in the bathroom when I share the cold to see you off,
but I am in the way, no kiss or hug, no time.

(This memory is from long ago, when Toussaint my now husband still lived in Utrecht and I would come over at times. He used to have night shifts at times.)

I noticed it is “estrange”, not “astrange” πŸ™‚
