Sudden snow

Sudden snow.
We are warm here,
the fire is burning
spreading orange glow
and we feel a bond
of contemplation.
There is no reason
to make haste, or go.
Outside is now another world
that we don’t need to know.
A world we call forgotten.

NaPoWriMo 3: “Do the hop?” “Schade”

NaPoWriMo

Today’s prompt was to write about a poem inspired by a song that was no 1 hit on the day you were born… I so hoped it was a nice depressing French chanson.  But guess what was no 1 on Jan 4 of that particular year? Danny and the Juniors “Let’s go do the hop!” (in the US) Now what to make of that?? “Or, if the number one song doesn’t appeal, perhaps try writing a poem based on or incorporating lyrics from the first pop song that you remember.” Okay, now I think “Danny Boy” can be seen as a popsong. If you stretch it a little.

Original lyrics:

Bah-bah-bah-bah,

bah-bah-bah-bah
Bah-bah-bah-bah. bah-bah-bah-bah, at the hop!

Well,

you can rock it you can roll it
You can stop and you can stroll it at the

hop
When the record starts spinnin’
You *chalypso* when you chicken at

the hop
Do the dance sensation that is sweepin’ the nation at the

hop

Ah, let’s go to the hop
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s

go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop
Come on, let’s go to the

hop

Well, you can swing it you can groove it
You can really start to

move it at the hop
Where the jockey is the smoothest
And the music is the

coolest at the hop
All the cats and chicks can get their kicks at the

hop
Let’s go!

Let’s go to the hop
Let’s go to the hop, (oh

baby)
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop
Come on,

let’s go to the hop
Let’s go!

Well,

you can rock it you can roll it
You can stop and you can stroll it at the

hop
When the record starts spinnin’
You *chalypso* when you chicken at

the hop
Do the dance sensation that is sweepin’ the nation at the

hop

You can swing it you can groove it
You can really start to move

it at the hop
Where the jockey is the smoothest
And the music is the

coolest at the hop.
All the cats and chicks can get their kicks at the

hop.
Let’s go!

Let’s go to the hop
Let’s go to the hop, (oh

baby)
Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)
Let’s go to the hop
Come on,

let’s go to the hop

Bah-bah-bah-bah, bah-bah-bah-bah
Bah-bah-bah-bah.

bah-bah-bah-bah, at the hop!

Okay, so this is a bit of a challenge:

Oh Danny Boy, what is that noise your making?
The wireless plays this tune and does so all day they long.
Think of this poor new baby you’ve been waking
with all your hop, what is this kind of song?

Have you no sense than yelling in this fashion?
What does it mean, this word that you call hop?
Will you be kind and show us some compassion
for baby’s sake, shut up now, please do stop!

But if you like, you may be sitting baby
as she seems fond of the way you look
and if you do your best, then one day Danny, maybe
she’ll write a poem ‘bout you for a poetry book!

😉

Then, however, after I wrote this, I found out that on the German hit list (no such thing in Dutch those days?), it was Caterina Valente who was no 1, with her hit Wenn meine Sonne scheint. (When my son shines) I also found it named Wo meine Sonne scheint. (wo = where) . Unfortunately I can’t find anything back of this song, no lyrics, no music. So I just have a title. I made this :

Schade

Wenn meine Sonne scheint
und wenn ich bei dir bin
das Leben hat mehr Sinn
zur zweit, als ohne.

Es regnet immer nur
sonsst wenn ich bei dir bin
hat meine Leben sinn.
Zusammen is mehr Spass.

Dann hat das Leben Sinn
aber die Sonn’ist hin
und so bist du.
So Schade.

🙂 I hope it is German anyway.

In the UK, the no 1 hit on my day of birth was “Mary’s boychild” by Harry Belafonte.
🙂 I think that theme has been done quite enough! And elsewere on the planet Jerry Lee Lewis had a no 1 hit with his Great Balls of Fire. Somehow that title makes me giggle.
So all this is not that serious, hope you will enjoy anyway! 🙂
